A website is a must
Sizable wedding portfolio
Experience and training
Must have backup equipment
Package or Collections
WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER MUST HAVE A WEBSITE
You will find this requirement at or near the top of every list of “How To Find Best Wedding Photographer”. Having a website is just part of doing business as a professional photographer. Look for websites that are well designed and easy to navigate. Within reason of course. The photographer may or may not be website specialists. As a rule, the more professional the website, the more professional the photography business. Social media, such as Facebook, Instagram and other social sharing platforms are not websites.
The photographers website is important for two reasons. First, it shows that the photographer is a professional wedding photographer. Remember, anyone can post a couple of images on social media. But it does not give you a true feel for the type or quality of work they do. So, while a website does not mean that someone is positively a professional wedding photographer. But, it does mean that they are serious about their business. Second, it give you a chance to see a larger body of work. Again, just about anyone can take a few hundred pictures and get one or two that will look good. A professional photographer knows how to make 98 out of one hundred look good.
VIEW THE WEDDING PORTFOLIO
This requirement comes without even saying. You are just looking at the photographers work to see if it fits your style and goals. Make sure the photographer has a large enough portfolio so that you can get a feel for indoor, outdoor, and different lighting situations. As an example, how do they cover the reception, do they cover the details, the getting ready, the family and formal portraits. These are all things that would give you a well-rounded view of the type of the photography you can expect.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Some photographers may not list their experience or training on their website, so it makes it a bit difficult sometimes. But you want the photographer that has both the experience and training of some type to make sure that they can cover your wedding. This does not mean that the photographer must have attended college or have a degree in art. Both of those are helpful, but many of the best wedding photographers learn more by doing. So, you may want to give extra weight to photographers that have a great amount of experience.
This is another one of those that means exactly what it says. Does the photographer bring backup equipment, such as extra lights, extra cameras, extra memory cards? These are some of the things that truthfully rarely go wrong. That is because most professional photographers are using top quality equipment and cameras. But just to make sure your wedding day goes off without the problem a backup camera and other equipment is necessary.
PACKAGES OR COLLECTIONS
Simply said, these are things that photographers include or offer in their pre-designed packages. In addition to specific packages and collections, many photographers offer à la cart pricing, meaning that you can choose what you want. You might think of this as one of those things that you found the photographer that shoots the style you are looking for and now you want to save what you’re just going to get for your money.
THE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS PERSONALITY
This has nothing to do with the photographer’s technical ability or even their artistic ability. It has more to do with how you interact with the photographer. You are going to be spending one of the most important days of your life with this person or persons. Make sure it is somebody that understands what you want and explains how the day is going to unfold.
We like to tell our clients we do a lot of handholding. Which means nothing more than we are there to give them information to answer any questions and to help them with any aspect of their planning. By the time your wedding arrives the photography will be the last thing you have to worry about. You will know what images we will capture, and you will know where we are going to be and when we are going to be there.
